Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W is a year older today, Wednesday March 27th.

Born March 27, 1981 in the United States, Banky W moved back to Nigeria when he was five, and started singing in the choir at 8.

Banky W moved to New York to attend college on a scholarship; earning a degree in Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. While still in college, he won the ‘Albany Idol’ competition, which catapulted him into the spotlight.

Banky W started making waves in the US; he got a distribution deal with TransWorld (Coconut’s, Warehouse Music, Spec’s Music); one of North America’s largest music distributors for his EP ‘Undeniable’. It became one of the top selling independent records, won him the 2003 R&B/Soul Artist of the Year at the Urban Independent Music Awards.

The Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.) record label boss moved to Nigeria in 2008 after the completion of his album ‘Mr Capable’. He followed that up with ‘The W Experience in 2009′, and now R&BW released in February 2013 is still selling.

The multiple awards-winning artiste remained in Dubai after 2face Idibia’s wedding last weekend, and he’s expected to celebrate his birthday with friends in the tourist destination city.
